Communities in Queensland are still cut off following the floods calamity.
Only a few days before Christmas, scores of towns in Queensland's far north were left isolated, prompting a massive recovery effort.
After being left stranded for days, over 100 people of the isolated Wujal Wujal village in the far north have been transported to Cooktown .In a significant military effort, some people were saved from roofs and houses devastated by flooding.
The depth of the emergency was exposed by flood marks on residential ceilings.
After the flooding, Wujal Wujal Deputy Mayor Regan Kulka's house was one of the homes encased in a thick coating of brown muck.Overnight, it was anticipated that all those who wished to leave would be safely evacuated; nevertheless, an elderly man remains missing.
Landslides have destroyed the normally picture-perfect 70-kilometre stretch of the Captain Cook Highway, making the only means of sending supplies north of Cairns, via boat.
Captain Jason Moore recalled, "They broke down in tears when we told them we were bringing food."Weeks may pass before the road is fixed, leaving Port Douglas, a popular vacation destination, isolated and rapidly running out of supplies.
There were additional evacuations in Wonga Beach, which is another 15 kilometers north.
"Very concerned for his wellbeing, especially now that they've been able to access his property and can't find him," Steven Miles, the premier, said.
Before she and her six-week-old child, Cooper, were evacuated in a tinny, Hineida Burza♿ said that her husband had once been washed away.
"Bit scary, when water's like coming up near your house, and you've got a screaming baby," she stated.
Now that they're back at home, they join the many others in the area who must undertake a significant cleanup effort—in their case, without power.
Mayor of Douglas Shire Michael Kerr emphasised that Port Douglas was "untouched" but acknowledged that the work would take "a long time".
"At this stage we've now had the technical people in then they've done the assessments of the roads so we know which roads need the repairs and we know where they are that the blockages are," he stated."At this stage we've now had the technical people in then they've done the assessments of the roads so we know which roads need the repairs and we know where they are that the blockages are," he stated.
"And now we're making the actions of plans to get those things fixed."
